Safe Harbor Children's Shelter - Serving abused, neglected, homeless, and runaway children

Safe Harbor Children's Shelter, Inc. was founded in 1992. Susan Hamer, Shelter founder, worked diligently throughout the early years of the Shelter to find key community members to assist in fund raising. In 1992, her work came to fruition in the form of the Safe Harbor Auxiliary. The Auxiliary was initially organized by Sea Island resident, Charlotte Hunter, who also served as the first chairman of the Auxiliary board and subsequently as its president. The Safe Harbor Board of Directors governs the Auxiliary, with a representative of the Auxiliary serving as a voting board member and attending all board meetings.

The Auxiliary, operating under the 501 (c)(3) of Safe Harbor, is made up of over 150 volunteers who meet quarterly to plan a slate of fundraising activities that support much of the operation of Safe Harbor Children's Shelter. In its first year of operation, the Auxiliary raised $25,000. In 1997, Auxiliary fundraisers produced over $175,000. Needless to say, the organization has grown and thrived over the years.

And, the Auxiliary has grown from doing chicken fries, bake sales, and bargainattas to major golf tournaments. World-renowned professional golfer Davis Love III sponsored the Davis Love III Golf Challenge Matches held from 1992 through 1996. These golf tournaments were highly successful, bringing in much needed funds for Safe Harbor operation and expansion. In 1997, the Auxiliary sponsored a Designer Showhouse and "This is Dedicated to the Children We Love" concerts were presented during the following years.

The Auxiliary's signature event, the Annual Winter Antiques Show & Sale has taken place for thirteen years. The Jekyll Island Club Hotel has been home to this event since 1998.

There are a variety of ways you can become a member of the Safe Harbor Auxiliary to support the great work that we do.

• Guardian - Active members participate in active services and programs of the Auxiliary. $50 annually.

• Patron - Associate members are interested in the purpose of the auxiliary and may choose active or inactive status.
$150 annually.

• Benefactor - Life members are exempt from further payment of dues. May be active or inactive. $350
